This course will provide a detailed overview of H2 and LH2 technologies for a hydrogen-fuelled aircraft. This will include an overview of the fundamental properties of gaseous and liquid hydrogen and the implications on materials, manufacturing and safety for aircraft applications.

The course will also comprise material on:

  • LH2 aircraft and propulsion system design.
  • LH2 fuel tanks, cryogenic fuel systems and integration including thermal management and control.
  • Combustion systems and the means and challenges associated with minimising non-CO2 emissions i.e., NOx and Contrails.

The course builds on thought leadership by Cranfield university and our industrial partners in several ongoing and concluded large research and innovation projects including:

EU projects: , , , ,

UK ATI (Aerospace technology institute) projects: and (Airbus-led), , and (Rolls-Royce UK-led) and

Cranfield university has been appointed the lead for the hydrogen theme of coordinating the input of other UK universities with relevant expertise. The team has identified 3 research sub themes that are necessary to expedite into service H2 fuelled aircraft.

These include:

  • H2 in the aircraft,
  • H2 in the airport,
  • H2 to the airport.

This course mainly focuses on the first sub-theme i.e., “H2 in the aircraft” although some material on H2 production as well as airport infrastructure, ground operations and public perception will be also presented.

Course structure

The course will comprise a combination of lectures on fundamentals as well as an overview of the outcomes and lessons learned from state-of-the-art research programmes by both Â鶹´«Ã½AV and our industrial partners. A tour of CU’s H2-related experimental facilities will also be provided with an emphasis on the technologies being researched and the health and safety provisions that have been put in place.

Active participation from the delegates is strongly encouraged. All delegates will receive a Certificate of Attendance upon completion of this course.

What you will learn

On completion of the course, the course delegates should develop good knowledge of the material outlined below:

  • Challenges for LH2 aircraft.
  • H2 fundamental properties and handling.
  • Decarbonising a country.
  • H2 safety (aircraft, airport, storage, refuelling).
  • H2 aircraft certification.

H2 Aircraft Design

  • LH2 tank design challenges.
  • LH2 tank and fuel system design and integration.
  • LH2 tank fluid movement and sloshing.
  • H2 aircraft design and performance analysis.

Propulsion and Fuel System Integration

  • H2 propulsion system design.

  • H2 combustor design for aero and stationary gas turbines.
  • Low NOx H2 combustion CFD methodologies and gaps.
  • Low NOx H2 combustion and thermoacoustics.
  • Health and safety considerations for LH2 / H2 experimental rigs.

Other Enabling Topics

  • H2 aircraft ground operations and airport infrastructure.
  • H2 propulsion systems – synergies with electrification.
  • Materials and manufacturing techniques for H2 aircraft.
  • Contrails formation, modelling and mitigation strategies.

Who should attend

The course will be of greatest benefit to delegates with a university degree, or equivalent qualification, in science or engineering, or relevant experience. Although mainly intended for individuals who are currently actively engaged in the aviation industry with an interest in “H2 for Aviation”, the course will also be useful for graduates considering a career in (decarbonising) aviation.

Delegates from, but not limited to, the following are encouraged to attend: aircraft and engine original equipment manufacturers and their suppliers; energy and fuel companies; certification authorities; legislators and policy makers; airports; H2 and LHcomputational model developers; and academia.

Speakers

The course will be presented through lectures and tutorials conducted by members of Â鶹´«Ã½AV’s staff all of whom have considerable academic and industrial experience. Additional lectures will be presented by Senior engineers from industry.
