What you will learn
On successful completion of the course you will be able to:
- Define the electrical, electronic, software, and mechanical architecture needed for a modern fighting vehicle,
- Select and assess electrical, electronic, electro-optic and mechanical systems required to upgrade legacy military vehicles,
- Assess human factors and man-machine interface aspects of military systems.
Core content
A Systems Engineering approach is used to consider, power generation and storage, motor and actuator technologies, power budgeting electronic subsystem, vetronics and the digital battlefield, current and future civilian and military databus standards and operation, radio communications equipment. Electro-optic subsystem, thermal imaging and image intensifying electro-optic systems, laser designators. Also considered are, HUMS, systems assessment, Ergonomics and the man-machine interface. When taken as a Short Course for Credit, 10 credit points can be put towards either the Defence and Security (Engineering) MSc, Gun Systems Design MSc or Military Vehicle Technology MSc.

Cranfield Defence and Security (CDS) is a Cranfield School based at the Ministry of Defence establishment on the Oxfordshire/Wiltshire borders.
Shrivenham itself lies in the picturesque Vale of the White Horse, close to the M4 motorway which links London and South Wales. It is 7 miles from Swindon, the nearest town, which lies off the M4 at the hub of Britain’s motorway network.
Bath, Cheltenham, Bristol and Oxford are all within an hour’s drive and London less than two hours away by car.
