Climate change and human activity are having profound impacts on catchments. Increasing temperatures, more frequent and intense rainstorms, and more prolonged droughts are causing direct and indirect changes to vegetation, soils and rivers that affect water quantity and quality via multiple mechanisms.

This one-day course provides an in-depth exploration of the impacts of climate change on river systems. It takes a process-based perspective that explains how climate change is altering river hydrology, geomorphology, water chemistry and ecology to affect water resources and risks.

Course structure

The course will be delivered through a combination of lectures, interactive discussions, and practical case studies.

What you will learn

The course combines essential scientific background on river processes with up-to-date information on climate change impacts. You will learn how changes in temperature and precipitation are altering the geomorphic functioning of river systems. You will also learn how water quality in rivers is influenced by natural factors and human activities, and how water quality may change in the future. The course will provide you with practical understanding of river systems that will help you to anticipate changes to ecological status, raw water quantity and quality, and flood and erosion to support development of sustainable solutions.
