Climate change and human activity are having profound impacts on catchments. Increasing temperatures, more frequent and intense rainstorms, and more prolonged droughts are causing direct and indirect changes to vegetation, soils and rivers that affect water quantity and quality via multiple mechanisms.

This one-day course explores soil science and its role in catchment hydrology. Focusing on the structure, diversity, and hydrology of soil and how soil properties influence water movement and retention. It also examines the relationship between soils, vegetation, and nutrients, and the impacts of human activities on soil health.

Course structure

The course will be delivered through a combination of lectures, interactive discussions, and hands-on practical sessions. The day will feature a practical GIS session, providing participants with the opportunity to apply GIS tools for delineation and characterization of catchments.
