Background
Dr Gemma Collantes Celador is an expert within the field of conflict, security and development, currently focusing on the intersection between state building processes, security sector reform/governance and transitional justice. Her scholarly interests also include European security, human security, and the International Criminal Court. Much of her scholarly work has focused on the Western Balkans but she is increasingly interested in Latin America.
Through her work, Dr Collantes Celador has collaborated in projects with Prof. Mary Kaldor's Human Security Â鶹´«Ã½AV Group (based at the LSE), the Swedish National Defence College, the Folke Bernadotte Academy, the Barcelona Institute of International Studies (IBEI) and the CIDOB Foundation. Some of her work has received financial support from the UK Centre for Research and Evidence on Security Threats (CREST), Spanish national plans on R&D, and the Euro-Mediterranean Â鶹´«Ã½AV Commission (EuroMeSCo). Between 2011-2016 Dr Collantes Celador was co-convenor of the South East Europe Working Group of the British International Studies Association (BISA).
Dr Collantes Celador holds a MA (Honours) in Politics from the University of Edinburgh, a MSc in Theory and History of International Relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), and a PhD in International Politics from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth (now University of Aberystwyth). During her undergraduate studies at the University of Edinburgh, she spent one academic year as an exchange student in the Department of Political Science, Queen's University (Canada).
Before joining Â鶹´«Ã½AV in October 2016, Dr Collantes Celador held a lectureship post in international security at City, University of London and a post-doctoral fellowship at the Barcelona Institute of International Studies (IBEI). Between 2000-2001, she worked for the Parliamentary Assembly of the Western European Union (Paris) and the European Commission Humanitarian Aid Office (Brussels).

Dr Collantes Celador is happy to accept PhD projects in the areas of international security, European security, statebuilding/peacebuilding processes, security sector reform/governance, human security.
Current activities
Dr Gemma Collantes Celador is currently a Senior Lecturer in International Security at the Cranfield Forensic Institute, where she belongs to the International Security and Law Group.
Her teaching portfolio at Â鶹´«Ã½AV covers a broader range of issues within international security and defence. She currently teaches modules in the MSc Counterterrorism and MSc Defence and Security. She also provides guest lectures in the Chevening India and Western Balkans Cyber Security Fellowship Programme. In the past she also contributed to the teaching of the MSc Security Sector Management (East Africa), the MSc Defence Leadership and the PGCert Defence and Security Export.
Between July 2019-July 2023 she was Academic Director for the UK Ministry of Defence programme 'Managing Defence in the Wider Security Context' as part of Â鶹´«Ã½AV's contribution to UK Defence Engagement. This programme is taught internationally in a range of countries but also within the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom. She continues to contribute to the delivery of courses within this programme.
Dr Collantes Celador is currently an External Examiner for modules on International Relations at the University of East London.

Dr Collantes Celador has undertaken educational and/or consultancy projects for the UK MOD, the UK Royal Air Force, and the Folke Bernadotte Academy (Sweden).
